For newborn, it isn’t about the content of the book, its mote about bonding time. “Reading a book to your newborn is a one-on-one activity that you can really turn into a special time with your baby,” says Mary Ann Abrams, MD, Reach Out and Read’s Medical Director (reachoutandread.org). By reading to your child early, it could them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. The child may not understand the meaning of all the words, he could still pick up the rhythm and melody of language. And these become a part of a his life.

Reading could and should become part of parents’ life too. Life with newborn is hectic and chaos even, but if you could set few minutes everyday to read for your child, this would help tremendously. Take your time to read for him regularly would also send him the message that reading is important and fun.

When the kids get older, reading to them is very important too. Reading aloud lets children use their imaginations to explore people, places, times, and events beyond their own experiences. Especially when the children understand the books, this would give you and your childs more things to talk about, more things to share and ultimately bringing the family closer.
